At Detroit Bariatrics, our goal is to help obese and morbidly obese individuals to reach a healthy body weight. Morbid obesity is considered a chronic disease that can lead to a variety of often life-threatening health problems. For morbidly obese patients, undergoing a surgical weight loss procedure and reducing body weight can diminish, and in some cases entirely eliminate, obesity-related health complications.

Dr. Nunn and our staff of highly trained medical professionals will provide you with compassionate, state-of-the-art care throughout your treatment. During your initial consultation, you and Dr. Nunn will discuss your weight-loss options and select the procedure that is best suited for your needs.

Contact Detroit Bariatrics today for more information about treating obesity with the LAP-BAND® System or gastric bypass surgery.

Find out if you are a good candidate for surgical weight loss surgery by calculating your body mass index (BMI):

Between 20-25: You are considered to be of “ideal weight.” A BMI over 25 is considered to be obese.

Greater than 25-30: At this BMI, excess body weight can begin to compromise health.

Between 35-40: If you are in this BMI range and experiencing medical problems weight loss surgery is recommended, as it is likely to improve health.

Greater than 40: Weight loss surgery is highly recommended. At this level of obesity, the risk of severe health problems is very high and weight loss surgery can dramatically decrease the risk and severity of weight-related health problems. The benefits of surgery greatly outweigh the possible risks.

Greater than 60: Weight loss surgery is highly recommended. Large amounts of excess weight place extreme stress on the body. The health benefits of surgery greatly outweigh the possible risks, making weight loss surgery the best option for improving health.

If weight loss surgery is recommended for your BMI, we invite you to learn more about the innovative procedures that we offer to improve your health and quality of life. Contact our office today to schedule your initial appointment with Dr. Nunn.

What does your BMI mean?
Underweight = <20
Normal Weight = 20-25
Overweight = 25-30
Obese = 30-35
Severe Obesity = 35-40
Morbidly Obese = 40 +

Individuals are considered morbidly obese when they have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above. Generally, these patients are 100 pounds or more overweight. The excess weight associated with morbid obesity places vast amounts of stress on almost every system of the body, which can shorten life span and decrease an individual’s quality of life. Weight loss surgery is usually ideal for those who are morbidly obese, as the benefits of surgery greatly overshadow the risks.
